Snug Safety Alternatives: Daily Check-In Apps Compared (2026)
What Snug Safety does well, where it falls short for some families, and how Surewell, Circle Alert, Just Checking In and a medical alert compare.
The short answer: Snug Safety is a good app, and for many families it’s the right one: the free plan works, and its paid Dispatch plan puts a person on the phone when a check-in is missed. Families usually look elsewhere for one of three reasons: they want the whole family to share the alerts in one place, they also worry about medicines or scam calls, or their parent’s real risk is falls, which no check-in app can catch. Here is how the alternatives compare.
Surewell is our app, and it’s one of the alternatives below. Every fact comes from each company’s own site, help pages or store listing, checked on October 27, 2026.
What Snug Safety does well
Snug has been on the App Store since 2016, with a 4.9 rating from more than 2,200 reviews. Its strengths are real:
- A free plan that works. One daily check-in at a time your parent chooses. If it’s missed, Snug texts their emergency contacts with the last known location.
- Contacts don’t need the app. Alerts arrive as text messages, so a neighbor or a brother who won’t install anything can still be told.
- A human follow-up, if you pay. With Dispatch ($19.99 a month or $149.99 a year), a dispatcher calls your parent ten minutes after a missed deadline, then the contacts, and asks local emergency services for a wellness check if no one can be reached.
- A backup way to check in. If the phone is lost or dead, your parent can check in by calling Snug’s phone line.
Where families look for something else
- Alerts are texts, one person at a time. On the free plan, contacts get a text message. There’s no shared place where the family can see today’s check-in at a glance or know who has already called Mom.
- It’s a check-in, and only a check-in. If you also worry about missed medicines or the “grandson in trouble” phone call, you’ll need other tools alongside it.
- The Android app is rated lower. Snug’s Google Play rating is 3.9, compared with 4.9 on the App Store.
- Free is one check-in a day. Two or three daily check-ins cost $17.99 a year.

Surewell: for families who share the worry
Surewell is the app we make. Your parent taps “I’m OK” once a day in a window you agree on, and if they don’t, Surewell reminds them first. Fifteen minutes after the window ends the whole family is alerted, at thirty a second alert suggests calling or asking a neighbor, and at forty-five you see the phone’s last signs of life. A check-in at any point sends everyone an all-clear.
It also covers the other two worries most families have: medicine reminders that ring on your parent’s phone, with a family alert when a dose is missed, and a scam check, where your parent shares a suspicious text or screenshot and gets a plain answer. When a caller sounds like you and asks for money, your parent can ask you in Surewell, while still on the line, whether it’s really you.
Your parent installs it on their own phone, sees exactly what is shared, and can pause or leave at any time. Choose it over Snug if you want one calm app for the whole family that covers check-ins, medicines and scams, for less than half the price of Snug Dispatch. Stay with Snug if you need a free plan, alerts to people without the app, or a human dispatcher; Surewell has none of those.
Circle Alert: texts to a circle, for less
Circle Alert sends a text to your parent’s circle when a scheduled check-in is missed. At $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year it’s one of the cheaper paid options, with a one-week free trial. Its listing doesn’t say how quickly the circle is told, and it has far fewer reviews than Snug (113 on the App Store).
Just Checking In: for parents who’d share how they feel
Just Checking In asks your parent to tap how they’re feeling, and tells their circle when a scheduled check-in is missed. The free plan includes several check-ins a day and unlimited circle members. It’s built around emotional wellbeing rather than safety, and free alerts only reach people with the app.
A medical alert: when falls are the worry
If your parent is unsteady or has fallen before, a check-in app will only notice hours later, at the next missed check-in. A medical alert device such as Lively or Medical Guardian puts a button on a lanyard or wrist that reaches a 24/7 response center, with fall detection as an add-on. It costs more and your parent has to wear and charge it, but it answers in minutes. See check-in app or medical alert? for the full trade-off.
How to decide
- Want free, and texts to anyone? Stay with Snug.
- Nobody lives nearby to knock on the door? Snug Dispatch, or a medical alert service.
- Several siblings sharing the worry, plus medicines and scams? Try Surewell free for two weeks.
- Falls are the main risk? Add a medical alert or an Apple Watch with Fall Detection, whichever check-in you choose.

Questions families ask
Is Snug Safety free?
Yes. Snug's free plan includes one daily check-in, and a text to emergency contacts with the last known location when it's missed. Up to three daily check-ins cost $17.99 a year, and the Dispatch plan, with a person who follows up, costs $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year (prices checked October 27, 2026).
What happens when you miss a Snug check-in?
On the free plan, Snug texts your emergency contacts with your last known location; its help pages say ten minutes after the deadline, and its page for contacts says fifteen. With Dispatch, a dispatcher calls you ten minutes after the deadline, then your contacts, and asks local emergency services for a wellness check if no one can be reached.
What is the difference between Snug Safety and Surewell?
Both are daily check-ins. Snug is free to start, texts contacts who don't need the app, and offers a paid human dispatcher. Surewell has no free plan, but adds medicine reminders, a scam check and "Is this really you?" for voice-clone calls, alerts the whole family in the app, and shows your parent exactly what is shared.
